Jonty Ideas

This is a spitballing, brainstorming, random collection of thoughts & ideas. I’m not attaching to anything, but wanted a place to start throwing things out there.

NEW YORK

I’ve been thinking a lot about what scenes would be ideal to shoot in New York (if that’s still the plan). Here are some thoughts on that… so far:

• Sc. 14. Jonty & Phil Meet. Not 100% sure about this one, but it would be nice to feel the city around them as they reconnect and we see Jonty beat down by the city.

• Sc. 21 & 22. Homeless people & Cash. I’m not sure if this is a NY, but seems worth exploring, depending on what we can find in Toronto.

• Sc. 41. Sacha & Jonty on Phil’s Fire Escape. Again, not sure it’s worth using precious NY time, but I love the idea of feeling city around them.

• Sc. 44 & 65. Marquee outside the theater.

• Sc. 53. Jonty walks the city streets, dejected. I would love to find some long lens wides, compressing NY into a frame with him. This seems like a decent nominee.

• Sc. 79. Final scene with Jonty & Phil saying goodbye. I would love this to have some of the most gorgeous shots of New York in all of history. Some of our fellas lit romantically by the city and also dwarfed by it.

JONTY’S COMPOUND

• I have been wondering how you feel about Yorgos Lanthimos and his gigantic wides. They sometimes feel too “look-at-me” for my taste, but I did start wondering if Jonty’s compound has these giant, lonely wides. Hal Ashby meets Yorgos? Also, that could serve as a nice contrast to the tight interiors of Phil’s apartment.

  CHRISTMAS

• Like most red-blooded Americans my ageI’ve seen Home Alone a million times. However, it wasn’t until a couple years ago that I really registered the brilliant production design. I saw some film nerd breakdown of the color palette and it blew my mind. It’s one of the mst controlled palettes I’ve ever seen that doesn’t feel stylized or overbearing. I don’t know that this is for us, but it got me wondering: How much Christmas do we want this movie to have?
